Getting Your Passport
Passport Process
The process of getting a passport is not that hard unless you wait to the last minute. The first thing you need to do is get a list of all the documents you need and to fill out the application.
The easiest way to do this is to go to your local post office. Here you can, many times, get the application and if you go to your area’s main office, they can take your picture and file it for you there. If not, you will need to go to a passport application acceptance facility.
You can locate one near you at: https://iafdb.travel.state.gov
The required photo can be taken at any Walgreens or CVS and sometimes you can find other places that offer these as well. You will need two forms of ID, a passport photo, and you need to have photo copies of all your supporting documents (I.E. State or federal ID’s). Renewals can be handled through a renewal process without a trip to the office.
You must apply in person if:
You are applying for your first U.S. passport
You are under age 16
Your previous U.S. passport was issued when you were under age 16
Your previous U.S. passport was lost, stolen, or damaged
Your previous U.S. passport was issued more than 15 years ago
If none of the above statements apply to you, you may be eligible to Renew via Mail.
All documents needed, deadlines and wait times can be found at: https://travel.state.gov/
The most important thing to remember is: do not wait till the last minute.
Passport fees as of January 2019 are:
First time Application: $110.00 for Passport and $35 for filing fee
Renewal Application: $110.00
Expedited Processing Fee: $60.00
Two Day Delivery: $16.48
Submitting the incorrect fees or information can delay the process. Always refer to the website for current fees and information at: http://travel.state.gov/fees or call 1-877-487-2778, TDD/TTY: 1-888-874-7793.
